\nI\u2019m taking a break from my NYFW Series. Five more to come.<\/p>\n

Scene: The mask. A necessary accessory that has become a way to express ourselves. I\u2019ve noticed over the years Asians\u00a0visiting\u00a0the city wearing masks which is attributed to\u00a0protection; from environmental harms, air pollutants,\u00a0allergens, and\u00a0the\u00a0sun.\u00a0The modern surgical mask with multiple layers of gauze dates to the late 1800s.\u00a0At the beginning of the pandemic, face coverings were a health and safety precaution\u00a0and still are, but as people settled into the reality, all sorts of different styles\u00a0have emerged.\u00a0Function and style.\u00a0We all know wearing a mask is\u00a0essential during this pandemic. Protecting others and ourselves when interacting. It\u2019s not a simple\u00a0cultural proposition.\u00a0And, of course, the face mask is political. As the country moves toward reopening, masks are assuredly part of our future.
\nWearing masks is\u00a0a sartorial sign that we\u00a0are willing to give up some freedom and comfort for the common good. And exhibits our\u00a0individuality with\u00a0different patterns, colors, materials, and styles we choose. There are masks for every taste and budget. They include bandannas, balaclava,\u00a0scarves, and shields.\u00a0It\u2019s no small thing that fashion has gotten hold of masks. The designers,\u00a0artists, and sewists\u00a0have taken liberty in smoothing edges and heightening the\u00a0look and fit.\u00a0The face mask has become a symbol of our times, our\u00a0armour.\u00a0Stay safe xox<\/p>\n
